Trees in Urban Design

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the value of street trees to enhance pedestrian communities. Trees not only beauty our streets, they cleanse the air, absorb carbon dioxide, and lower ambient temperatures, reducing the need for air conditioning.

In the early 1980s, Tom Hylton and a few like-minded neighbors organized Trees Inc., a non-profit organization that raised nearly $500,000 to plant and maintain street trees in Pottstown.

You can download a brochure on Pottstown’s Shade Tree Program by clicking on Part 1 (pages 1-5) and Part 2 (pages 6-10).

Detailed information about Pottstown’s tree planting campaign, and the care and maintenance of street trees, is available on the Trees Inc. Web site, pottstowntrees.org.
